Macaroni and cheese is one of the most beloved comfort foods—and this oven-baked version takes it to the next level. Made with a rich homemade cheese sauce and finished with a golden breadcrumb topping, it’s creamy in the middle, crispy on top, and absolutely satisfying in every bite. This recipe is perfect as a family-friendly dinner or a cozy side dish for gatherings and holidays.
Ingredients:
2 cups elbow macaroni
¼ cup butter
¼ cup all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
½ tsp salt
½ cup breadcrumbs
Optional: pinch of black pepper or mustard powder for extra flavor
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in flour to make a roux and cook for about 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in the milk, making sure there are no lumps. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens.
Add the shredded cheese and salt. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
Combine the cheese sauce with the cooked macaroni. Mix well and transfer to a greased 9x9 or 8x11 baking dish.
In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with a drizzle of melted butter. Sprinkle over the top of the mac and cheese.
Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and crisp. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
This recipe is both indulgent and simple—ideal for busy nights when you still want to enjoy a homemade meal. It’s kid-approved and can be customized with add-ins like cooked bacon, sautéed spinach, or diced tomatoes for even more flavor.
